The Kano State Government has provided clarification on the recent Court of Appeal ruling regarding the ongoing emirship dispute, countering widespread misinterpretations and speculative reports in the media.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s spokesman, Sunusi Dawakin-Tofa, issued a statement on Saturday addressing the matter. Additionally, Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Haruna Dederi, spoke at a press briefing held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Kano, where he stressed the importance of accurate information regarding the legal proceedings.
Dederi explained that the Court of Appeal, in its judgment delivered on January 10, 2025, upheld the repeal of the Kano Emirate Council Law, 2019, while also overturning a previous ruling by the Federal High Court in Kano. However, he noted that Alhaji Aminu Dan’agundi, who is dissatisfied with the verdict, has since taken the matter to the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

He further clarified that the Court of Appeal’s judgment remains valid and binding until the Supreme Court delivers its final decision. He also described the recent stay of execution granted by the appellate court as a routine legal measure intended to maintain the status quo while the case progresses.
“The Kano State Government urges the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and avoid any form of provocation,” the statement read.
Additionally, the government confirmed that its legal team has been directed to study the court’s proceedings and determine the appropriate next steps in accordance with the law.
On behalf of Governor Yusuf, the Attorney General expressed appreciation to the people of Kano for their patience, understanding, and prayers for peace and progress in both the state and the country at large.
