Kenya Rugby Union Make Controversial Selection

The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) are set to appoint former player Dennis “Ironman” Mwanja as the new Kenya Sevens head coach.

Reports say an agreement has been reached by both parties with the KRU board likely to officially name Mwanja on Wednesday to take over from New Zealand’s Paul Feeney.

Mwanja fended of the challenge of former Kenya Sevens coach Innocent “Namcos” Simiyu with majority of the KRU board members opting for the former international.

It is believed that the board had only two options left after the Kenya Cup caucus headed by Kenya Cup champions, KCB Rugby chairman Xavier Makuba, struck out former Kenya Sevens coach “Pau” Murunga from contention.

Simiyu was intially thought to be the favourite to reclaim his former position and seemed the clear favourite.

In question is Mwanja’s credentials as the Union required a person who had handled a team at high performance for the last three seasons and must be a World Rugby Level II coach.

Namcos and Murunga met all these conditions apart from Mwanja.
