In a significant political move, Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’oei has announced President William Ruto‘s administration’s readiness to back Raila Odinga’s bid for the African Union Commission chairperson role.

Raila’s official declaration on Thursday to vie for the AU Commission Chairperson position, aiming to succeed Moussa Faki later this year, has stirred a wave of reactions within Kenya’s political landscape.

Key figures from the Kenya Kwanza government have thrown their weight behind Raila’s candidature, reflecting a shift in political dynamics.

Sing’oei affirmed the ministry’s commitment to support Raila’s quest for the AU leadership, echoing past efforts in facilitating qualified Kenyans’ candidature to international organisations.

Raila’s bid is reportedly enjoying the endorsement of President Ruto, with a purported agreement sealed during a meeting with former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo in Mombasa last year. Obasanjo, who also attended Raila’s press conference announcing his bid, further solidified consultations by meeting President Ruto in Murang’a.

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, speaking at the AU’s Executive Council of Foreign Affairs Ministers meeting in Addis Ababa, highlighted the region’s readiness to present a candidate for the AU Commission chairmanship, stressing East Africa’s deserving opportunity.

Similarly, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria lauded Raila’s bid, expressing confidence in the positive change he could bring to Africa as AU chairperson.

Raila himself affirmed his readiness to take on the challenge, stating his belief in being the right candidate for the job and offering his services to the continent.

As Raila Odinga’s bid for the AU Commission chair gains momentum, it underscores Kenya’s strategic involvement in continental affairs and signals a new chapter in regional politics.
