Kenya’s Sebastian Sawe delivered a stellar performance at the Valencia Marathon on Sunday, clocking an impressive 2hr 2min 5sec in his debut race, securing his place as the fifth-fastest marathon runner in history.
Sawe, the 2023 World Half-Marathon Champion, joins an elite group of marathon legends, trailing only Kelvin Kiptum, Eliud Kipchoge, Kenenisa Bekele, and Sisay Lemma.
In the women’s race, Ethiopia’s Megertu Alemu shattered her personal best by nearly two minutes, claiming victory in 2hr 16min 49sec.
The marathon’s success comes just a month after devastating floods struck Valencia, leaving 230 dead and causing significant damage to infrastructure and homes. The event was a testament to resilience, drawing world-class athletes and bringing hope to the recovering city.
