Tema-based rapper Kwesi Arthur has flown high the flag of Ghana once again on the international front.
The artiste is representing Ghana on the 2020 BET Hip-hop Awards Cypher.
Kwesi continues his wing ways as he is the second Ghanaian to be featured on the international cypher after Sarkodie did in 2019. He emerged victorious in the Best International Flow category and delivered an iconic speech upon receipt of the plaque on stage.
The year cypher of hip hop artistes have launched the career of many musicians or the first to give them the mainstream limelight. Case in point is Nicki Minaj’s feature in the 2009 cypher.
This year, Ghanaian rapper Kwesi Arthur is going to be featured in the cypher.
He will be representing the country in the 2020 BET Hip Hop Awards Cypher.
The performance has already been recorded and it will be streamed during the award show this Wednesday.
Since the news hit online, Ghanaians have been pretty excited.
Kwesi Arthur won the 2020 VGMA Best Rapper of the Year award in August. Therefore, being the only Ghanaian to be featured in the cypher gives proof to the international appeal of his rap style.
This is not the first time the Tema-based rapper has graced the BET stage. In 2018, he gained his first BET nomination and has gone ahead to gain other nominations from international award schemes.
The BET Hip-Hop Cypher however, is done as a precursor to the award ceremony where rappers are brought together to prove their mettle and battle it out for supremacy.
Although no Ghanaian act was nominated for this year’s 2020 BET Hip-Hop awards, many Ghanaians are expressing satisfaction at seeing Kwesi Arthur being featured on the cypher.
Kwesi was featured alongside other African artistes including Angola’s Cage One, Ginger Trill (South Africa), Rosa Ree (Tanzania), King Kaka (Kenya), Suspect 95 (Ivory Coast), Elizabeth Ventura (Angola) and Omg Oumy Gueye (Senegal).
The cypher will be released on October 20 ahead of the BET Hip-Hop Awards which is slated for October 28.
Born Emmanuel Kwesi Danso Arthur Junior, Kwesi Arthur is currently considered one of the best young artistes in Ghana and in Africa.
He became the second Ghanaian rapper to be nominated for BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher after Sarkodie’s nomination in 2019.
A product of Tema Secondary School, Kwesi Arthur began to pursue a career in music after listening to Drake‘s debut album, Thank Me Later.
In 2015 he released the lead single, Grind Day, from his debut EP, Live from Nkrumah Krom.
The record was released under his independent outfit and supported by a social movement called GroundUp Chale.
He later released the remix for Grind Day, featuring Sarkodie and Medikal.
Kwesi Arthur has collaborated with numerous Ghanaian acts which include Sarkodie, Medikal, KiDi, Jason E LA, R2Bees, B4bonah, M3dal, M.anifest, EL, Stonebwoy, Shatta Wale and South African rapper Nasty C .
Wizkid’s ‘Made in Lagos’ Makes Guardian UK’s Best Albums of 2020 List
Popular Nigerian singer and songwriter Wizkid’s highly celebrated album “Made In Lagos” has been listed among The Guardian UK‘s Top 50 Best Albums of 2020, making it the only African album on the list.
According to the publication, the list is drawn from votes by Guardian music critics – each critic votes for their top 20 albums, with points allocated for each placing, and those points tallied to create this order.
The 14-track album not only envelops listeners in the unique sounds, live instrumentation and vibes of Lagos but celebrates Wizkid’s love and appreciation for where he comes from and his inspirational journey with standout tracks such as “Blessed” and “Reckless.”
The project includes features from an incredible group of chart-topping artistes – Burna Boy, Skepta, Damian Marley, H.E.R., Ella Mai and Starboy Entertainment’s youngest signee Terri.
“Nigerian pop continued to establish itself more firmly on the international stage in 2020 with successful albums by Burna Boy, Davido, Tiwa Savage, Tems and more. The best of them all was this lilting, versatile record by Wizkid,” the Guardian said in its article.
“Guest stars from across the Black Atlantic – Skepta and Ella Mai from the UK, HER from the US, Damian Marley and Projexx from Jamaica – create the sense of a diasporic dialogue, where reggae, dancehall, rap and Afro-swing seamlessly and sensually intertwine.”
Within one week of release, Made In Lagos broke several African streaming records. It became the first African album to debut on the Spotify Global Album chart, and within the top ten at that. The album surpassed 100 million streams across five platforms nine days after release, a huge milestone for an Afrobeats artist.
It debuted at no. 15 on the UK Albums Chart with over 4,100 album-equivalent units and no. 80 on the US Billboard 200 with over 10,000 album-equivalent units. “Ginger” became the only charting single off the album in the first week of release, peaking at no. 67 on the UK Singles Chart.
Congratulations are in order for Wizkid, as he recently won BET Soul Train Awards for the second time. Honouring artistes across 12 categories, the 2020 “SOUL TRAIN AWARDS” recognised Summer Walker (Album of the Year), Megan Thee Stallion (Rhythm & Beats Award), Brandy (Soul Train Certified), Beyoncé, Blue Ivy, Saint Jhn & Wizkid (Video of the Year), Snoh Aalegra (Best New Artist) and Kirk Franklin (Best Gospel/Inspirational Award) for their special contributions to the genre.
