On Wednesday, February 15, 2023, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, the Director-General, and Cardinal James Omolaja Odunmbaku, the Chairman of the Independent Campaign Council for Tinubu/Shettima and Sanwoolu/Hamzat, hosted education stakeholders in Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria.
The Director of Education, Dr. Adeyinka Olarinmoye, and the entire Directorate gave the education sector actors an opportunity to engage with the leadership of the Directorate.
The Governor was represented by the Chief of Staff of Lagos State, who also serves as the DG of the ICC.
In his welcome speech, he expressed satisfaction in the calibre of attendees and acknowledged their desire to improve education standards in Lagos, the centre of excellence and aquatic splendour.
The event’s theme, “Understanding Education in the 21st Century: A Holistic View,” was delivered by Prof. S.G Odewumi, the pioneer Dean of School of Transport at Lagos State University.
He gave a lecture on the history and definitions of education, what it should be, and what it is. He suggested bringing back Higher National Certificates (HNC) to bridge the gap between when students wait for admission into higher institutions and emphasised that education should meet societal goals and needs.
Hon. Kehinde Bamigbetan stressed the importance of preparing children with the right skills and knowledge to make them economically independent adults who can contribute to national development. Prof. Sylvester Odion-Akhaine saw the event as a start of a new journey that will chart a novel course for the state of education in Lagos State.
In her vote of thanks, the Director of Education reminded the audience of Alhaji Lateef Jakande’s solid foundation for education in Lagos state, which Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and successive governors have continued to improve upon.
She solicited support for electing Asiwaju Tinubu and Shettima as president and the reelection of Sanwoolu/Hamzat in the upcoming elections, as voting for the APC candidates is laying a solid foundation for innovation, excellence, and greater opportunities for teachers and students in the state.
She expressed gratitude to the leadership of the ICC for believing in her capacity to lead the education directorate, the lead speaker, and the sponsor of the event, Dr. Caleb Adebogun, for their support. She equally thanked the participants for attending the program. Finally, Cardinal Odunmbaku closed the event, promising to ensure that the resolutions and suggestions made reached the Governor.
