The Lagos State Government has announced a traffic diversion plan as it prepares for emergency repairs on the Independence/Mekwen Bridge, which connects motorists to Marina and CMS. The repair work is set to begin on Wednesday, March 19, and will continue until Monday, May 26, 2025.
The announcement was made via the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation’s official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday.
During the repair period, the section of the road stretching from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) through Bonny Camp Bridge to Independence Bridge will be closed to traffic. Additionally, the service lane at Bonny Camp Underpass Bridge (inbound Independence Bridge) will be inaccessible. However, the service lane linking Ahmadu Bello Way to Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue will remain open.
To minimise disruptions, the Lagos State Government has provided alternative routes: For motorists heading from Ahmadu Bello Way to Victoria Island, use Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue to Akin Adesola Street, proceed to Falomo Roundabout, and continue via Obafemi Awolowo Road to Ring Road.

For those traveling from Ahmadu Bello Way to the 3rd Mainland Bridge, take Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue to Akin Adesola Street, then connect to Alfred Rewane Road via Osborne Road to access Ring Road.
For access from Ahmadu Bello Way to Inner Marina/CMS, divert through Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue to Akin Adesola Street, then connect via Falomo Roundabout and Obafemi Awolowo Road to J.K. Randle Road/King George V Road.
For motorists traveling from Inner Marina/CMS to Ahmadu Bello Way, direct access will be available through the existing road network.
Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, assured the public that the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) would be stationed at key points to manage traffic flow and minimise congestion.
He urged road users to cooperate with the diversion plan, exercise patience, and plan their journeys accordingly. The repairs, overseen by the Federal Ministry of Works, aim to rehabilitate the asphalt pavement along the affected sections.
The state government also encouraged commuters to consider public transportation options where possible to reduce congestion during the repair period.
