Liberia’s Minister of Finance and Development Planning (MFDP), Samuel D. Tweah says President George Weah is “entitled” to $2,000 daily allowance during his current controversial foreign trip.

Although Tweah did not state the total budget for the president’s foreign trip, the daily pay covers his two-week ago long trip, nine days stop to watch the FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The sum amounts to about L$ 7,074,800.

During a widely-monitored online TV show, Spoon Talk, the Minister said President Weah is entitled to the same amount his predecessor received during foreign trips.

Many critics including some within the ruling Congress for Democratic Change party, say awarding Weah such a huge amount a day goes against his promise to reduce public spending in favour of his “pro-masses” agenda.

Weah wrote the senate two weeks ago that he would be out of the country from November 1 to November 23 including a visit to Qatar from November 15-23.

The former footballer intends to watch his son, who was born in America, playing in the US vs Wales match.

The president’s communication team has said the foreign trip was already “yielding dividends” for the country.
