Sadio Mane of Senegal believes Argentina are strong favourites to win the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
After helping Bayern Munich overcome Barcelona in the Champions League, the Lion of Teranga was asked for his thoughts on the favourites to win the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar. The former Liverpool forward scored alongside Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Benjamin Pavard as Bayern Munich won 3-0.
Mane named Argentina as his favourite country to win the competition when asked to name a country he thinks would win it. He was then asked about former Barcelona great Lionel Messi’s ability.
“I watched Messi play yesterday. He is incredible! Mane expressed this. “Argentina, like Brazil, Germany, France, or England, is a team that can win.”
So, when pushed to clarify, Mane believes that these other nations, too, have the potential to win the World Cup.
Senegal, the defending Africa Cup of Nations champion, are in Group A with Qatar, the Netherlands, and Ecuador. It is their third World Cup qualification, with their greatest performance being in 2002, when they reached the quarter-finals.
Cameroon, Ghana, Morocco, and Tunisia are the other four African countries competing in the competition. No African team has ever advanced beyond the quarter-finals; Ghana, Senegal, and Cameroon are the only sides to have reached the last eight.
For now, though, Mane is concentrating on Bayern Munich until November 11, when club football will be suspended for the World Cup. Their first game will be against the Netherlands on November 21.
