The Libyan Prosecutor-General’s office has ordered the detention of Khalifa Abdul Sadiq, the Minister of Oil and Gas in the Government of National Unity, over allegations of financial corruption.
According to the Prosecutor-General’s Office, Abdul Sadiq is accused of coercing a corporate accounting officer into approving a document that authorised $500 million in spending for a foreign company, in direct violation of legal protocols. The company in question has not been identified.
The prosecutor’s investigation concluded that Abdul Sadiq’s actions were “inconsistent with his job duties,” leading to his detention.
Minister Abdul Sadiq had been appointed as the acting oil minister following the suspension of Mohamed Oun, who was under investigation for alleged misconduct. Oun was eventually cleared of all charges and reinstated to his position.
