Christians in Nigeria are observing a “different” Easter this year, amidst the ongoing economic challenges gripping the country.

Numerous households are marking this significant occasion with simplicity, influenced by the soaring costs of essential commodities and transportation, particularly for those intending to travel during the holidays.

Easter holds profound importance for Christians worldwide, commemorating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the central figure in Christianity.

Traditionally, this season is characterised by joyful celebrations such as thanksgiving ceremonies, family gatherings, reunions, and other festive moments shared with loved ones.

However, this year’s celebration lacks the extravagance of large, joyous gatherings and sumptuous feasts, as many Nigerians grapple with the burden of economic hardship.

Basic food items like beans, garri, rice, groundnut oil, yam, sachet water, and protein sources such as fish, chicken, meat, and eggs have become almost unaffordable for numerous families, particularly low income earners.

Nigeria’s inflation rate reached an unprecedented 31.70 percent in February, with food inflation, comprising 50 percent of the overall rate, escalating to 37.92 percent in the same month, up from 35.41 percent in January.

Currently, a 50kg bag of rice ranges between N73,000 and N87,000; a 10kg bag sells for N19,500, and a 5kg bag for N9,500. Additionally, a four-litre paint bucket of yellow garri is priced at N2,500, while Ijebu garri sells for N3,500.

Furthermore, there has been a 30% increase in transportation costs, rendering holiday trips unfeasible for many families who would have loved to be with their loved ones during this period.
