The Black Panther actress has made history as the first African jury of one of the five largest film festivals in the world. In its 74-year history, the German Film Festival – Berlinale – has never had a black jury head.
The jury, headed by actress Lupita Nyong’o, will select the winner in the Berlin International Film Festival’s two main categories, the Golden and Silver Bear. This is a huge milestone because the criticism of the top five international film festivals—Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Sundance, and Toronto – has been hinged on their lack of diversity and representation.
The Oscar award winner remarked that the jury’s diversity would enhance the selection process for the winning films. According to Nyong’o “That’s the beauty of bringing people together from different backgrounds – we respond to different things,”.
The event which began on Thursday, February 15, 2024, will run till Sunday, 25th of February. The festival brings together Concerning the nature of this year’s festival, she also added that We have a lot of world experience and opinion and it’s gonna be interesting. It’s probably also gonna be spicy.”
Berlinale will feature about 200 films across various genres, lengths, and formats, with twenty vying for main categories at the Award Ceremony on February 24. The festival will kick off with “Small Things Like These,” directed by Tim Mielants, and features Matt Damon and Cillian Murphy, both nominated for an Oscar for their roles in “Oppenheimer.”
