A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale struck western South Africa early on Sunday, sending tremors across multiple regions.
The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake occurred at 2:51 a.m. local time (00:51 GMT), approximately 101 km west of Brandvlei, a small town in the Northern Cape Province.
The epicentre was recorded at a latitude of 30.45 degrees south and a longitude of 19.44 degrees east, with a depth of 10 km. Residents of Cape Town, the legislative capital, reported experiencing strong tremors during the event.
The government has yet to issue an official statement on casualties or significant property damage. Local authorities are expected to carry out further assessments in the affected areas.
