Mozambique’s governing Frelimo party has appointed a regional governor, Daniel Chapo, as its new leader, ahead of national elections scheduled for October 9.

Chapo’s nomination follows intense debates within the party over the weekend, which saw his closest rival drop out from the race. This places Chapo as a likely flagbearer to take over from President Filipe Nyusi in October.

The former political science lecturer and radio presenter has never served in the cabinet before. According to the constitution, President Nyusi cannot serve a third term, following his two terms in office.

Since its independence in 1975 from Portugal, Frelimo has never lost national polls in Mozambique.
