Labour Party spokesperson and political strategist Yunusa Tanko has clarified that the objectives of a growing coalition are not just about opposing the current government but aimed at safeguarding Nigeria’s democracy and mobilising capable Nigerians for the nation’s survival.
He stressed that the recent gathering was not of political party chairmen but by individuals committed to Nigeria’s future.
“There was no single political party chairman at that particular city, none. There were only individuals who have run for election and some other members of that political party,” he stated. This, he argued, demonstrates that the coalition is focused on mobilising qualified individuals who can advocate for the interests of the Nigerian people.
Addressing speculation about the coalition’s motives, Tanko clarified that while political party involvement could come later, the priority now is to “fight for the soul of Nigeria.”
“Interest of course will come in, but at the moment, the most important interest is to save our democracy and save the country from anarchy and total destruction.”

Responding to critics questioning whether the coalition has a concrete policy agenda beyond opposition, he said a policy document outlining their objectives would be presented in due course.
He highlighted the involvement of influential political figures, including a former vice president and a former governor of Anambra State, who he noted has strong backing among Nigerian youth.
Tanko condemned what he sees as an erosion of democratic principles, warning against political manoeuvres driven by “personal interest and greed,” adding that many coalition members have long fought for democracy and are unwilling to see it undermined.
With a coalition of influential political figures and a commitment to transparency, Tanko insists that this movement is not just about power but about preserving Nigeria’s democratic framework.
