The use of special licence plates that give its owners priority on the road and security privileges has been banned in Nigeria by the Inspector General of Police.

Police condemned usage of the unique license plates, known locally as Spy, to disobey traffic laws in a statement.

There may still be some of these plates in use nationwide, but they have all been permanently revoked.

Holders must switch back to their car’s original license plate, according to a statement from police spokesperson Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

Senior government officials who drive vehicles with Spy license plates have also been ordered to “ensure timely compliance with this command or risk being arrested for disobedience of the order” by police personnel connected to them.

“This order is necessary to forestall the continuous disregard for traffic rules and regulations and other extant laws guiding road use by individuals hiding under,” the police statement said.

Violators of the ban were not subject to any fines, although police have been instructed to seize any special plates still in use.
