Officials from the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and the state Environmental Sanitation Corps have closed the Oja Oba Market in the Ile Epo area of the state due to poor hygienic conditions.
Muyiwa Gbadegesin, LAWMA’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, confirmed this in a statement posted on X.com Sunday.
Gbadegesin stated, “Following complaints from concerned members of the public, particularly #Freestuv1, Oja Oba market at Ile Epo was sealed this morning by a combined #ZeroToleranceLagos Task Force comprised of #Lawma_gov Monitoring and Compliance Team and men and women of #LAGESCOfficial.
“This market has become notorious for very poor sanitary conditions and failure to comply with set waste management regulations.”
He explained that the measure was done to safeguard the public from food-borne and water-borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, and dysentery.
He also urged the people to report any instances of poor sanitation in markets or other commercial establishments.
In February, LAWMA officials closed Ire-Akari Market in Lagos’ Isolo district due to inadequate cleanliness.
