Nigeria’s Police Service Commission has sanctioned the termination of the careers of 18 senior police officers, which include ten Assistant Superintendents, four Deputy Superintendents, two Chief Superintendents, and one Superintendent.
Additionally, the Commission approved the demotion of 19 other senior police officers, including one Assistant Commissioner of Police, one Chief Superintendent, two Superintendents, two Deputy Superintendents, and thirteen Assistant Superintendents.
Ikechukwu Ani, the Commission’s spokesperson, disclosed this information in a statement released on Friday. The statement indicated that these suspensions are part of major decisions made during the Commission’s recent Plenary Meeting in Abuja.
The PSC dealt with 110 Pending Disciplinary Matters (PDM), 23 Appeals and petitions, and 13 court judgments requiring compliance.
The statement highlighted that the Commission had previously examined and approved recommendations concerning various promotions, which have been communicated to the Inspector General of Police for action.
It also said that several other officers deemed guilty received various penalties, such as severe reprimands and letters of warning.
“Most of the officers dismissed are also set to face prosecution by the Nigeria Police Force’s Legal Unit. Three Pending Disciplinary Matters have been put on hold, pending further information from the Inspector General of Police. The Commission also reviewed 23 Appeals and petitions, as well as nine legal issues and court judgments.”
The Plenary Meeting was led by the Commission’s Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu (Rtd), who stressed that the Commission will now promptly address Police Disciplinary matters to enable officers not at fault to advance in their careers while ensuring those found guilty serve their penalties.
He cautioned that the Commission would not tolerate Police Officers who become involved in civil disputes such as land, marital, or rental issues.
