Nigeria’s Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development has unveiled plans to construct over 10,000 housing units under the Renewed Hope Medic Cities initiative to address the housing needs of medical professionals across Nigeria.
Ahmed Dangiwa, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, disclosed this on Friday in a statement signed by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Salisu Haiba.
Dangiwa revealed that 10,112 housing units are currently under construction across 14 locations nationwide as part of the Renewed Hope Housing Agenda. Key projects include 3,112 units in Karsana, Abuja; 2,000 units in Lagos; and 2,000 in Kano. Additionally, 12 Renewed Hope Estates, each comprising 250 units, are under development in 12 states, with plans to expand to the remaining 18 states.
To make these homes accessible, the initiative offers flexible ownership schemes, including National Housing Fund (NHF) mortgage loans of up to 30 years, rent-to-own arrangements, instalment payment plans, and outright purchase options. Medical workers interested in these units can apply via the official portal.
The minister highlighted the pressing need to improve housing availability for healthcare workers, particularly in urban centres where medical facilities are concentrated.
The Renewed Hope Medic Cities project is a key component of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and aims to enhance the welfare of healthcare workers by providing decent, affordable housing.
Dr. Tope Osundara, National President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD), praised the initiative as a vital step in improving the welfare of resident doctors. He proposed constructing 1,000 units in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) during the project’s first phase.
Osundara added that adequate housing for resident doctors is crucial for efficient emergency responses and mitigating the brain drain affecting Nigeria’s health sector.
Dr. Suleiman Sadiq, a NARD member and representative of the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), highlighted the collaborative nature of the project. It involves partnerships between the Ministries of Housing and Health, the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, REDAN, and public-private entities.
Sadiq noted that construction is scheduled to commence between January and February, emphasizing that the initiative will boost healthcare workers’ morale, improve their welfare, and enhance productivity in the sector.
