The United Nations has committed to enhancing its partnership with Nigeria to improve food security and agricultural productivity across the country.
During a recent visit to Abuja, UN Deputy Secretary-General Dr Amina Mohammed assured Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abubakar Kyari, of the international community’s readiness to support the ministry’s efforts to ensure food and nutrition security.
Dr Mohammed highlighted the challenges posed by climate change, food insecurity, and cross-border issues, noting that climate change is a global issue that transcends borders.
Minister Kyari welcomed the visit, describing it as an opportune moment for a paradigm shift in the agriculture sector, which is crucial for improving food systems. He emphasised the importance of the UN partnership in addressing both immediate and long-term food security needs.
“Also, the partnership will bolster efforts towards delivering on the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, as well as our strategies of operations over the next four years,” Kyari explained.
He also noted that the UN has provided valuable technical assistance in the past, and the ministry seeks continued support for initiatives such as the Value Chain Development Programme, particularly targeting increased food production in northern Nigeria.
