The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said that the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) will resume when the country’s government gives the thumbs up.
There have been a lot of contemplating in different African countries concerning their leagues suspension and resumption due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic which has paused all sporting activities.
Some leagues across the continent have been declared over, officials in Senegal have decided to use the play-off system once football is allowed to resume in the country.
Like Sierra Leone, Nigeria will continue their league football once the government allows it.
The NFF released a statement saying they will have a meeting with the various leagues to talk about resumption pending the government’s decision.
“We will liaise with the heads of the various Leagues (Nigeria Professional Football League; Nigeria National League; Nigeria Women Football League and; Nigeria Nation-wide League One) and other important stakeholders on the return of the domestic football season, subject to announcement by the Federal Government on resumption of football and other sporting activities in the country,” the statement read.
The NFF also discussed the use of the FIFA relief funds and most importantly the contract situation of the men’s national team coach Gernot Rohr who’s contract expires next month.
“The Executive Committee mandated the General Secretary to liaise with the Super Eagles’ Technical Adviser, Mr Gernot Rohr, with a view to concluding all matters around Mr Rohr’s new contract within the next one week,” an extract from the communique made public read.
Rohr, has helped the three-time African champions qualify and play at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. He also led them to a third-place finish at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt.
