A Nigerian man has received a one-year prison sentence after being found guilty of attempting to rape a female tourist from Australia while they were both on holiday in Bali, Indonesia. The verdict was delivered at the Denpasar District Court on July 6, as reported by Daily Mail Australia on Wednesday, July 12.
Presiding Judge Ida Bagus Bamadewa Patiputra stated, “The defendant, Idongesit Joseph Zion, has been legally and convincingly found guilty of attempted rape. He is sentenced to one year in prison.”
According to the court’s ruling, Zion fulfilled the criteria outlined in Article 285 of the Indonesian Penal Code (KUHP) along with Article 53 paragraph 1, which pertains to attempted rape. The court also noted that Zion’s actions violated decency values, aggravating the case further.
Prosecutor Ni Made Desi Pratiwi stated, “The aggravating factors include evident harm to the victim and the violation of decency values. The victim experienced losses and felt violated as a woman.”
However, the court took into consideration mitigating factors, including the fact that both the victim and the defendant had forgiven each other during the initial trial. As a result, the prosecution and Zion’s defense expressed their intention to review the judge’s sentence.
The incident occurred when KTR and Zion encountered each other at Finn Club on Berawa Beach Street in Canggu on December 2 of the previous year. While KTR was accompanied by her sister, Zion was accompanied by a friend.
After an interaction with Zion, KTR lost interest and decided to leave the club. Sensing her intention, Zion tried to gain her sympathy by offering her a ride back to her hotel.
Despite KTR’s refusal, Zion persisted and went to the extent of ordering an online motorcycle taxi for her. Falling victim to Zion’s deception, KTR unknowingly boarded the motorbike, which took her to Zion’s residence on Teuku Umar Street. It was there that Zion made his attempted assault.
Fortunately, KTR managed to raise an alarm just before the assault occurred.
