Nigeria’s Super Eagles are gearing up for an exciting international friendly against Saudi Arabia, set to take place in Portugal on October 13, 2023. The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) officially announced this fixture in a statement released on Wednesday.
The stage for this thrilling encounter will be the Estadio Municipal de Portimão, nestled in the scenic Algarve region. This stadium, which is home to Portimonense S.C. and boasts a capacity of nearly 10,000 spectators, promises an electric atmosphere for the friendly showdown.
The Super Eagles’ clash with Saudi Arabia comes just a month before they welcome Lesotho for a crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo. Following this friendly, within the same FIFA window in November, the Eagles will take on Zimbabwe in their second match of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, this time on foreign soil.
This meeting marks the second encounter between the Super Eagles and Saudi Arabia at the senior level. Their initial meeting, also a friendly back in 2010, ended in a goalless draw.
In their most recent outing, the Nigerian side put on a scintillating performance, defeating Sao Tome and Principe 6-0 in the final 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Uyo. Victor Osimhen notched a hat-trick, while Ademola Lookman, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Samuel Chukwueze each contributed a goal. Victor Boniface, making his Super Eagles debut, provided an assist that set up Chukwueze for the sixth goal, capping off a memorable victory.
