NYSC Confirms Musawa as Serving Corp Member, Minister Maintains Silence

The management of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has confirmed that Culture Minister Hannatu Musawa is currently a serving corps member, a revelation made by the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA).

Despite her ministerial role under President Tinubu’s cabinet, the NYSC verified her participation in the one-year youth service scheme. The Director of Press and Public Relations at NYSC headquarters, Eddy Megwa, confirmed her status.

Musawa’s primary assignment is reportedly at a law firm in Abuja, prompting HURIWA to question her dual responsibilities. The rights group urged NYSC to ensure she focuses on her service or her ministerial position.

HURIWA criticised the lack of transparency surrounding Musawa’s status during her appointment and questioned the scrutiny process by the Department of State Services.

HURIWA alleged that Musawa abandoned her previous NYSC stint in Ebonyi state, only to complete it later when mobilised this year.

The situation also raises concerns about her initial nomination to a national pension commission board without an NYSC certificate, which led to her rejection by the Senate in 2020. Musawa is well above 40 years.
