The Jigawa State Police Command confirmed a tragic boat accident on Sunday evening at Kwalgai River in Auyo Local Government Area, which resulted in the death of one person.
So far, 18 passengers have been rescued, but one person is still missing.
According to a press release from the State Police Command, the accident happened around 10:00 pm when about 20 marketers from Kwalgwai village boarded a canoe heading towards Hadin village across the Kwalgai River.
The canoe overturned due to strong waves and overloading. Quick responses from divers, fishermen, and local helpers, along with a police team led by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Auyo Division, saved 18 passengers.
DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, the Police Public Relations Officer for Jigawa State Command, said initial investigations found the accident was mainly caused by strong waves and overloading, making it hard for the boat operator to steer.
He mentioned that all rescued victims were receiving medical care at the hospital, and efforts are ongoing to find the missing passenger. The command advised caution, especially in bad weather, to avoid similar tragedies.
“Upon receiving the distress call, a team of policemen led by the DPO raced to the scene. Divers, fishermen, and good Samaritans were also swiftly notified and engaged in the rescue operation.
“Unfortunately, two female passengers were initially reported missing. Early on the morning of July 8, one of the missing females, identified as Habiba Ado, 18, from Kwalgwai, was found and rushed to Auyo hospital, where she was declared dead by the on-call medical doctor.
“A preliminary investigation indicated that the accident was primarily caused by powerful waves and overloading, which made it difficult for the driver to steer the canoe.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased and those affected by this tragic incident,” DSP Adam stated.
