Over 500 individuals have been apprehended in Mpumalanga, South Africa, since December 1 for alleged drunk driving, according to the province’s Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison.
These arrests were carried out by traffic law enforcement officers and police during various operations aimed at curbing dangerous behaviour on the roads.
MEC Jackie Macie commended the efforts of law enforcement, noting their contribution to reducing fatal accidents by holding offenders accountable.
“We should not only end up with arresting errant and drunk drivers on the road. They must also be punished so that our road safety messages are taken to heart by all. Drinking alcohol before taking to the road has left many families and communities distraught as they had to deal with deadly consequences of subsequent road crashes,” Macie emphasised.
The MEC also called on the public to report unsafe driving behaviour to help ensure safer roads.
Department spokesperson Moeti Mmusi revealed that traffic officers have inspected approximately 105,000 vehicles since the start of the festive season.
“Over 35,000 vehicles, especially heavy motor vehicles, went through various weighbridges across the province since the beginning of the holiday season.
“So far, 18,235 summonses were issued to motorists for various offences, mostly moving traffic violations,” Mmusi added.
As New Year celebrations approach, Macie urged the public to act responsibly, including refraining from drinking in public spaces or obstructing roads. He also encouraged organisers of New Year’s Eve events to collaborate closely with law enforcement to ensure the safety of attendees and maintain order.
“The MEC also encouraged all members of the security agencies to continue working hard to enforce the law and protect the citizens during this season and beyond,” Mmusi said.
