Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammad Shtayyeh submitted his resignation to Palestinian Authorities (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday over the escalating genocide in Gaza.
Shtayyeh mentioned that he is resigning to facilitate the establishment of a broad consensus among Palestinians regarding political arrangements in the aftermath of Israel’s conflict with the Islamist group Hamas in Gaza.
The decision comes amid increasing pressure on President Mahmoud Abbas from the United States to reform the Palestinian Authority as international endeavors intensify to quell the conflict in Gaza and establish a political framework for governing the enclave in the post-war period.
“The decision to resign came in light of the unprecedented escalation in the West Bank and Jerusalem and the war, genocide, and starvation in the Gaza Strip.
“I see that the next stage and its challenges require new governmental and political arrangements that take into account the new reality in Gaza and the need for a Palestinian-Palestinian consensus based on Palestinian unity and the extension of unity of authority over the land of Palestine,” he said.
Shtayyeh, an academic economist who took office in 2019 said the next stage would “require new governmental and political arrangements that take into account the emerging reality in the Gaza Strip, the national unity talks, and the urgent need for an inter-Palestinian consensus,” adding that it would require “the extension of the Authority’s authority over the entire land, Palestine.”
