Governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) are holding a pivotal meeting in Jos, Plateau State, today, in a bid to address leadership challenges within the party ahead of its national convention scheduled for Thursday in Abuja.
The gathering, attended by several prominent governors, is seen as a major step towards resolving internal disputes and preparing the party for upcoming leadership elections.
Discussions are expected to focus on the contentious position of the national chairman, Umar Damagum, which has sparked divisions in recent months.
Sources within the PDP indicate that the Jos meeting aims to align the governors on a unified strategy for the convention, ensuring a smooth transition of leadership.
The party has been grappling with internal conflicts, particularly following the suspension of its former national chairman, Iyorchia Ayu.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State, a key figure in the party, is believed to be playing a vital role in mediating among factions to foster unity. His leadership in hosting and facilitating discussions has been widely acknowledged as instrumental in the effort to stabilise the PDP’s structure.
The Plateau State government has expressed pride in hosting the meeting.
“We are thrilled to welcome the esteemed governors of the PDP to the home of peace and tourism. Plateau State is honoured to be the venue for this crucial meeting, which will contribute to finding solutions to Nigeria’s current challenges,” Musa Ibrahim Ashoms, the commissioner for information and communication said in a statement on Friday.
Political observers suggest the outcome of the meeting could influence the PDP’s credibility as an opposition force ahead of the 2027 general elections. With pressure mounting to resolve leadership conflicts, today’s deliberations are seen as critical to the party’s prospects.
