Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command have arrested seven suspects in connection with the killings of two Uber drivers in the Lekki and Ajah areas.
State Commissioner of Police, Mr Olarenwaju Ishola, disclosed this on Saturday while briefing journalists on the command’s recent achievements.
He revealed that the police apprehended a four-member gang—Emeka Akwara, 19; David Segun, 21; Samuel Ariori, 21; and Lukman Ariori, 19—for allegedly killing an Uber driver.
The suspects ordered an Uber ride on January 9 from Chevron in Lekki to Obalende. Upon reaching a secluded area, they robbed and fatally stabbed the driver multiple times in the neck. Although their attempt to steal the vehicle failed, two suspects were apprehended by bystanders and handed over to the police, leading to the arrest of the remaining two.
The victim’s body was deposited at the Mainland Hospital morgue in Yaba, and a Toyota Camry (AGL 650 HN) and knives were recovered from the suspects.
In a separate case, a three-member syndicate—Edmond Julius, 34; Abdullahi Umar, 32; and Saturday Oke, 40—was arrested for the murder of another Uber driver, Oluwaseyi Fowler, on September 12.
The suspects confessed to abducting the driver in Ajah, killing him, and stealing his Toyota Camry. The vehicle was sold to a criminal receiver, and the police recovered the victim’s decomposed body along with the stolen car.
Both cases are under investigation, and the suspects have been charged to court.
Commissioner Ishola urged drivers using Uber, Taxify, and similar platforms to remain vigilant. He advised against carrying multiple passengers and suggested searching passengers where possible, with a preference for seating them in the front.
“This is the third incident of this nature reported in three months. Many more may go unreported,” he cautioned, adding that the command plans to summon drivers for security awareness training.
