South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his deep sorrow and extended condolences to the families of 12 pupils who lost their lives in a horrific crash.

The students were from Laerskool Blyvooruitsig and Rocklands Primary School in Carletonville.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday when their school transport vehicle overturned and caught fire after being struck by another vehicle.

The driver also perished in the crash, while seven other pupils were rescued and are currently receiving medical treatment in the hospital.

The Premier of Gauteng, Panyaza Lesufi, along with Gauteng MEC for Education and Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane led a delegation to the site of the crash and paid a visit to the survivors at the hospital.
