Real Madrid have confirmed that star forward Kylian Mbappe sustained a left thigh injury during their Champions League victory against Atalanta earlier this week. The club did not specify how long the 25-year-old might be sidelined.
“Following tests carried out on Kylian Mbappe today by the Real Madrid medical department, the player has been diagnosed with a thigh injury in his left leg. His progress will be monitored,” the club stated on Thursday.
Mbappe opened the scoring in the 10th minute of Real Madrid’s 3-2 win in Bergamo on Tuesday, marking his 50th career goal in the Champions League and his 12th for Madrid since joining from Paris Saint-Germain last summer. However, he was substituted in the 36th minute after pulling up with muscle pain.
Coach Carlo Ancelotti downplayed the severity of the injury post-match, saying, “Mbappe has some discomfort in his hamstrings. It doesn’t seem serious but we’ll see tomorrow. He couldn’t sprint, it hurt him a bit and we thought it best to replace him.”
Mbappe’s absence raises questions about his availability for Real Madrid’s upcoming fixtures, including their La Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano on Saturday, the FIFA Intercontinental Cup final on December 18, and another crucial league match against Sevilla on December 22.
