Remo Stars FC has concluded the year 2023 as the leader of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) table with 29 points from 15 matches, regardless of the outcome of their match against Heartland on matchday 16. This achievement is noteworthy as it marks the first time in over a decade that the NPFL is in full swing at this time of the year.
In recent years, the NPFL has faced challenges, including delayed start dates, leading to an irregular calendar. Remo Stars’ impressive performance is seen as a positive development for the league.
As Remo Stars face Heartland, their lead at the top of the table will be determined by the points gap between them and Doma United and Lobi Stars. Doma United lost their matchday 16 game, leaving them one point behind; Lobi Stars, in third place, are three points adrift.
Remo Stars have not only accumulated the most points but have also scored the most goals in the league this season. They have scored 22 goals, three more than Enugu Rangers and Bayelsa United. Sikiru Alimi, the league’s joint top scorer, plays for Remo Stars, having scored 10 goals in 13 appearances.
The team’s strong performance this season is fueled by their second-place finish last season, where they narrowly missed out on the title. Remo Stars’ coach, Daniel Ogunmodede, expressed the team’s readiness for the NPFL season at the beginning, emphasising their long-term project and commitment to achieving success.
The Sky Blue Stars will continue their campaign against southwest rivals Sunshine Stars, Katsina United, and Abia Warriors as the season progresses towards the midway point.
