The National Association of Resident Doctors has embarked on a seven-day warning strike in all its facilities nationwide, seeking the release of its member, Dr Ganiyat Popoola, who has been held captive for over eight months.
Dr Dele Abdullahi, the President of NARD, announced in a statement that the strike will commence at midnight on Monday, August 26, 2024.
Abdullahi disclosed that the decision to go on strike was reached during the virtual Emergency National Executive Council meeting held on August 25.
The warning strike, declared to last for a week, will be comprehensive, with no provision for emergency care.
Dr Ganiyat Popoola, a registrar in the Department of Ophthalmology at the National Eye Centre, Kaduna, was kidnapped almost eight months ago, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was freed in March, Dr Popoola and her nephew are still in captivity.
NARD members previously staged protests in all tertiary hospitals nationwide, demanding the immediate release of Dr Popoola.
