Angry youths chased Allwell Ihunda, the Chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria in Rivers State, out of the secretariat on Tuesday.
Ihunda, who was also the Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Area, fled when protesting youths blocked his entry into the council secretariat.
Despite his security team firing shots to disperse the crowd, Ihunda managed to escape in a black SUV accompanied by aides, while his aides followed in another vehicle.
The youths shouted insults and pursued them, upset over Ihunda’s refusal to leave office after his term expired on June 17.
The local government chairmen, elected during Nyesom Wike’s time as Governor, said they were not handing over because a new law passed by the House of Assembly led by Martin Amaewhule extended their terms.
