South Africa’s Deputy President David Mabuza has confirmed that he has tendered his resignation to president Cyril Ramaphosa.
The presidency had refused to comment on purported claims that Mabuza had resigned.
However, on the sidelines of a funeral rite in Mpumalanga, Mabuza stated that it was only logical that he stepped down as the country’s second in command.
Paul Mashatile succeeded Mabuza as ANC deputy president after he was elected at the party’s national conference in December, which immediately stirred suggestions of an impending cabinet reshuffle.
Mabuza’s public confirmation of his plan to leave the presidency follows a series of political events which saw Mashatile confirmed as an ANC member of parliament earlier this week.
