President Salva Kiir of South Sudan has sacked the country’s health minister, according to a decree announced by the country’s media on Wednesday night.
No reasons were given for the sacking of Elizabeth Acuei Yol.
She is the first cabinet minister from the Sudan People’s Liberation in Opposition (SPLM-IO), the party of First Vice-President Riek Machar, to be expelled from the unity government.
After signing a peace pact to end the country’s six-year civil conflict, President Kiir and Machar created a unity government in February 2020.
Ms. Acuei was lauded by health partners for the country’s reaction to the Covid-19 outbreak during her term.
However, she has experienced criticism for her handling of the ministry’s business, which resulted in her being booed by MPs at a presentation in parliament in December.
Machar was encouraged by the MPs to suggest her firing due to her incapacity.
