American author Stephen King has demanded that the Academy Awards ceremony should not take place, hinting that he would not vote for this year’s nominations.
The famous horror author shared a post about it on the social networking platform Bluesky on Thursday.
He posted, “I’m not voting in the Oscars this year. In my opinion, they ought to cancel. No glamour while Los Angeles burns.”
The severe flames have been a problem for the Hollywood community.
Due to the flames that have ravaged Los Angeles County, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences postponed the presentation of nominations until January 23 and prolonged the Oscar voting period to January 17.
King is not alone among celebrities who have advocated for a halt to Hollywood’s awards season in the wake of the catastrophe.
Actresses Patricia Arquette and Jean Smart have openly proposed the concept.
Supporters of the Grammys and Oscars continuing as scheduled have pointed out that it could offer some sunshine amid the misery.
On Friday, King tweeted a reaction expressing his disbelief.
In another Bluesky post, he said, “I hear what you guys are saying about the Oscars and how they’re a celebration of life, and the show must go on, blah-blah-blah, so on and so forth.
“While some of it makes sense, it still seems to me like Nero is tinkering with Rome while it burns. Or, as it happens, dressing up while LA burns.”
As of Friday, the Grammy Awards and the Oscars are set to take place on February 2 and March 2, respectively.
