Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Yusuf has called for a shift in the UK’s approach to Sudan, urging the country to engage as friends rather than through confrontation at international forums, as reported by the state news agency SUNA.
Yusuf appealed during a meeting with Christian Turner, the director-general for political affairs at the UK Foreign Ministry, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
The Sudanese minister took the opportunity to explain the ongoing situation in Sudan, detailing the government’s efforts to facilitate humanitarian aid to those in need over the ongoing civil conflict.

He emphasised that Sudan and the UK should engage as friends rather than continue the confrontational approach, which he argued has proven to be ineffective.
Yusuf further asserted that any international initiatives or actions regarding Sudan should be carried out in consultation with the Sudanese government and its approval, stating that any actions taken without such consultation would not have a meaningful impact.
The civil war between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) began in April 2023 and has led to tens of thousands of deaths and widespread displacement.
In November 2024, Sudan’s government welcomed Russia’s veto of a British draft resolution at the UN Security Council, which called for an immediate ceasefire and the safe passage of civilians in the conflict.
