Sudan’s Ministry of Health has announced that 50 new cholera cases have been confirmed across five states, bringing the total cases to 28,376 since August, with a death toll of 836.
The health ministry noted a reduction in cholera infections across most regions, with no recent deaths reported. Cholera was declared an epidemic in Sudan on 12 August.
This health crisis unfolds amid a prolonged conflict between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), ongoing since April 2023. The UN reports that more than 20,000 people have died in the fighting, with over 14 million displaced across the region, exacerbating the country’s public health challenges.
