The head coach of the Super Eagles, Jose Peseiro, is presently in talks with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over a possible extension of his contract.

The contract of the Portuguese coach, who led the football team to the finals of the just concluded Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) hosted by Ivory Coast, is slated to expire at the end of February.

“My contract ends at the end of this month. Now I go to rest and I am speaking with the NFF to know about my future,” Coach Peseiro said.

“Now I need to rest as I’m very tired, everybody is tired but we are speaking together about my future.”

Peseiro is currently linked to the same role in Algeria after Coach Djamel Belmadi was sacked, after his team’s exit from the group stage of the AFCO tournament.

The Super Eagles coach has said the 1-2 loss to the Elephants of Ivory Coast was majorly due to the pressure on the players.

“Cote d’Ivoire were the main favourites for this tournament; they have very good players, wingers, and very fast wingers. Quality wingers in attack, they are a good team but they were almost out, I don’t know if that situation changed the pressure.

They were fantastic; they didn’t play with pressure, and they didn’t feel nervous, but on the contrary, my players, my team felt more nervous than their opponents.”

Coach Peseiro admitted that the Super Eagles lost hold of the ball many times, which was indicated by the 61 to 39 percentage possession after the final match.

“We lost many balls; I don’t know why; I don’t think my players were comfortable today. From the back, we lose too many balls, and with that, you allow the opponent to create many chances, and they attack and attack.”

The Super Eagles head coach insisted that his players are well-deserving of praise, noting that they gave a good fight towards winning the AFCON tournament.
