Abdul Nondo, the head of the youth wing for Tanzanian opposition party ACT Wazalendo, was found injured on Coco Beach in Dar es Salaam after an alleged abduction by individuals believed to be state security agents.
Nondo’s disappearance occurred on Sunday morning, days after the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party claimed a sweeping victory in local elections, which some opposition groups have labeled fraudulent.
According to ACT Wazalendo deputy chairperson Isihaka Mchinjita, Nondo had severe injuries to his legs, chest, back, and arms and appeared to have been tied up for an extended period, leaving his hands swollen.
Police confirmed that Nondo returned to the party’s headquarters late Sunday after being left on Coco Beach by unidentified assailants. He has since been taken to a hospital for treatment.
Authorities have launched an investigation to identify those responsible and uncover the motive behind the attack.
Abdul Nondo had been vocal in accusing police and immigration services of carrying out illegal arrests under false claims of individuals not being Tanzanian citizens. His abduction and assault are seen by many as part of a broader pattern of intimidation against opposition voices.
The incident comes as political tensions rise following the CCM’s landslide election win, which has been marred by allegations of vote-rigging and suppression of dissent.
ACT Wazalendo has called for justice, urging the government to ensure the safety of opposition figures and uphold democratic principles in the wake of the election.
