A two-story building has collapsed in the Sabon Gari area of Kano State, claiming the lives of three children.
Reports indicate that a 15-year-old girl remains trapped beneath the rubble, while her parents have been rescued and are receiving medical care.
Local sources reveal that the building housed a family of six, who were asleep when the structure gave way. The collapse is believed to have been caused by a landslide triggered by recent heavy rainfall in the area.
The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the incident to Channels Television on Thursday.
“We are deeply saddened to report the loss of three children in this tragic collapse,” said Nura Abdullahi, NEMA’s Territorial Coordinator. “Efforts are ongoing to rescue the girl still trapped and provide support to the surviving family members.”
The parents, identified as Mr. and Mrs. Aliyu Mine, were pulled from the debris and are currently hospitalized.
Loveday Okoh, a family relative, expressed relief at the parents’ survival but mourned the loss of the children. “It’s heartbreaking. While we are thankful for the rescue of the parents, the grief of losing the children is overwhelming,” Okoh said.
The rescue operation, led by NEMA, the Red Cross, and the Nigerian Police, continues as authorities work tirelessly to recover those still trapped.
Musa Abdullahi, Executive Secretary of the Red Cross, commended the collaboration among the rescue teams. “Our teams have been working under difficult conditions since the incident, striving to save lives and offer assistance,” Abdullahi said.
Ibrahim Abdullahi, Managing Director of the Kano State Urban Planning Development Authority, highlighted the broader lessons from the disaster. “This tragedy highlights the urgent need for stricter building safety regulations and improved urban planning,” he emphasized. “We must take this as a wake-up call to prevent similar incidents and safeguard our communities.”
As rescue efforts continue, the community remains tense, awaiting further updates.
