At least three individuals have lost their lives, with several others sustaining injuries after a Dangote Company cement truck experienced a brake failure on Tuesday, resulting in a tragic accident at the Ayetoro junction along the Lekki-Epe route in Lagos state.
The collision happened when the truck, descending from Ita-Opo, lost control and ultimately crashed into a tricycle and a stationary vehicle at the traffic light at Ayetoro.
Witnesses noted that the truck, unable to stop, careened into the Ayetoro complex and market area, creating pandemonium and raising safety alarms among locals and travellers.
Emergency services quickly responded to the scene, with a tow truck already on-site to remove the damaged vehicle and clear the street.
In a post on its official X account, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that three bodies from the incident had been taken to the morgue at Epe General Hospital.
“Three lives were lost, and they’ve been transferred to the morgue at Epe General Hospital while we have a tow truck on-site to remove the impacted vehicles.
“Traffic has been redirected to facilitate smoother vehicle movement,” part of the post said.
Commuters have been urged to avoid the Ita-Opo to Ayetoro route and instead follow the suggested detours, either from Ita-Opo to Shade or through the roundabout near the General Hospital.
Drivers and pedestrians are also encouraged to follow the altered routes to prevent additional disruptions while authorities address the situation.
