The United Nations has warned that Sudan is on the brink of disaster, with the potential for hundreds of thousands of deaths unless the ongoing conflict ends and humanitarian aid is delivered.
UN Human Rights chief Volker Turk highlighted the dire situation in Sudan, where famine is widespread and millions have fled their homes due to intense fighting between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Since April 2023, the brutal war has left Sudan facing what the UN calls the world’s largest humanitarian crisis. Turk emphasized the risk of atrocity crimes and mass fatalities from famine, with over 600,000 people already on the brink of starvation.
Thousands more are at risk in the coming months as 8.8 million people are displaced within Sudan, and another 3.5 million have fled abroad.
The humanitarian crisis is exacerbated by reports of widespread violence against civilians, including sexual assault, forced displacement, and looting. The African Union has called for a coordinated international effort to end the violence and allow uninterrupted aid to reach those in need.
