The US Secret Service Director, Kimberly Cheatle, has resigned following significant lapses related to the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Parliamentarians and an internal government watchdog had called for an inquiry into the agency’s handling of Trump’s security and how a gunman managed to get close enough to aim at the 2024 Republican presidential candidate during a rally in Pennsylvania. Lawmakers were particularly enraged after her public testimony in front of the House Oversight Committee on Monday, where she was reluctant to respond to many of the committee’s questions.
Last week, Cheatle acknowledged that the agency was “solely responsible” for the design and implementation of security at the Pennsylvania rally site, where the now-deceased gunman shot at Trump from an unsecured rooftop a few hundred feet from the rally stage.
The bullets narrowly missed Trump’s head, resulting in the death of one rallygoer and injuries to others.
