US President Donald Trump declared on Tuesday that Greenland should choose to join the United States, but if persuasion fails, the US would acquire the island “one way or the other.” Speaking before Congress, Trump briefly touched on international issues while focusing on domestic priorities, but reiterated his expansionist vision.
He praised the mineral-rich and strategically important Greenland, offering the “incredible people” of the island the opportunity to join the US. “We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America,” Trump said, but added that if Greenland declined, the US would still acquire it.
In a further demonstration of his geopolitical stance, Trump also mentioned his intention to “take back” the Panama Canal, a key strategic waterway the US relinquished to Panama in 1999.

After the Hong Kong-based company CK Hutchison sold Panama’s ports to a US-led consortium, Trump proclaimed success, reiterating his commitment to regain control of the canal and prevent China from gaining too much influence.
Trump has previously suggested the use of military force in acquiring both the Panama Canal and Greenland, a reflection of his “big power” approach to global relations. His rhetoric starkly contrasts with his claims to be a peacemaker, as seen in his handling of the Ukraine conflict.
In his speech, Trump read a letter from Ukrainian President Zelensky, who expressed willingness to sign an agreement allowing the US to access Ukraine’s mineral resources, continuing the president’s theme of national security and self-interest over traditional foreign aid.
