Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed the country’s chief of general staff as Kyiv seeks to strengthen its military operations on the battlefield.
According to a decree issued on Sunday, March 16, 2025, Anatoliy Bargylevych has been replaced by Andriy Gnatov, who has been tasked with enhancing the efficiency of military command.
As Ukraine continues to restructure its forces, Defence Minister Rustem Umerov highlighted the need to improve coordination within the army corps.
“We are systematically transforming the Armed Forces of Ukraine to enhance their combat effectiveness.

“This involves restructuring the command system and implementing clear standards,” Umerov wrote on Facebook.
Gnatov, who brings over 27 years of military experience, will take over the role, while Bargylevych has been reassigned as chief inspector of the defence ministry.
Meanwhile, in the eastern Donetsk region, heavy fighting persists, with Russia’s larger and better-equipped forces continuing their slow but steady advance despite significant losses.
