Emmerson Mnangagwa, the president of Zimbabwe, has accepted an invitation to the coronation of King Charles III, which will take place on May 6 at Westminster Abbey in London.

On Tuesday in the nation’s capital, Harare, the president and the UK ambassador met to talk about the upcoming coronation.

Coronation of Charles III and Camilla

Discussions Held at The Meeting

On Saturday, May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey, Charles III and his wife Camilla will be crowned as rulers of the United Kingdom and the other Commonwealth states. After the passing of his mother, Elizabeth II, on September 8, 2022, Charles succeeded to the throne.

The ceremony will differ slightly from earlier coronations in order to better reflect the diversity of religions, cultures, and communities in the United Kingdom. It will also be shorter than Elizabeth II’s 1953 coronation. Charles will be anointed first, signifying his spiritual accession to the throne, followed by his crowning and enthronement, signifying his assumption of temporal authority and duties. The ceremony to crown Camilla will be shorter and less ceremonial. In a state parade, the royal family will arrive at Buckingham Palace and make an appearance on the balcony to mark the anniversary.

The coronation will entail both formal crowning and public festivities in addition to a sacred anointing. The public will have the chance to celebrate with street festivities on May 7 when the Coronation Big Lunch takes place. The King and the Queen Consort’s charities will be represented in the Coronation Concert that day at Windsor Castle, which will also include members of the general public. The Great Help Out project, which promotes volunteering and community service, will take place on May 8. The concert at Windsor Castle and the coronation at Westminster Abbey will both be televised and streamed online.

This will be the 40th coronation of a British monarch to take place at Westminster Abbey since 1066 and the first to take place in the twenty-first century.

Throughout the meeting, they also discussed “trade, investment projects, and the significance of peaceful, free, and fair elections later this year,” according to a tweet from ambassador Melanie Robinson.

Following the implementation of land reforms during the administration of former long-time leader Robert Mugabe, Britain’s relations with Zimbabwe deteriorated.

Both the US and the EU continue to impose sanctions on organisations and leaders in Zimbabwe, including President Mnangagwa.
