Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and foremost Nigerian lawyer has revealed that he cannot in good conscience, continue to sit on the Lagos Judicial Panel.
Adegboruwa, in his reaction to the arrest of peaceful protesters at the Lekki Tollgate blamed the Nigerian government for failing to allow people express their rights as citizens.
At least 20 Nigerian protesters were held by the Police on Saturday morning and were led into a Black Maria. They were kept in dehumanising conditions.
Adegboruwa remarked that he had been monitoring events at the Lekki Toll Gate all morning, and is totally overwhelmed with the images, videos and sundry evidence of police brutality of armless civilians, who ventured to protest at the Toll Gate,” Adegboruwa said.
He added that while people are yet to come to terms with the events of October 20, 2020, it becomes worrisome that the security agencies have not learnt any positive lesson from those occurrences.
He is presently consulting with his constituency within the civil society, as to his continued participation in the EndSARS Judicial Panel.
He noted that the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari is a product of protest and civil disobedience and he will not in good conscience continue to sit at any Panel of Inquiry to heal wounds and end police brutality, when fresh assaults are being perpetrated with impunity.
Hundreds of protesters marched to Lekki Tollgate on Saturday in a bid to stop the Lagos State government from reopening the tollgate, venue of alleged killings of innocent #ENDSARS protesters on October 20, 2020.
Adegboruwa, Rinu Oduala, Tope Majekodunmi and Patience Udoh all voted against reopening the tollgate, but were not enough to prevent the decision as five other members of the panel voted for a reopening.
Oduala, who alongside Majekodunmi is a representative of the youths on the panel opted out over what she tagged a “coverup” of the killings of innocent protesters.
