An intergovernmental agreement between Moscow and Burundi on civilian nuclear energy, according to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, is currently in its last stages of preparation.
After speaking with Burundi’s Foreign Minister Albert Shingiro in Bujumbura on Tuesday, Lavrov made the statements.
“The roadmap on nuclear energy has already been signed between Rosatom [Russian state energy corporation] and its Burundian partners,” Lavrov said.
He declared that cooperation in the peaceful use of nuclear energy was a commitment shared by both sides.
In a nuclear energy roadmap agreement that the two nations signed in November of last year, Russia pledged to help Burundi set up nuclear plants.
Lavrov met with Burundian President Evariste Ndayishimiye for additional bilateral discussions before leaving for Mozambique.
Following a recent trip to Kenya and before his arrival in South Africa, Lavrov is currently touring various African countries. Shingiro reaffirmed that Burundi would not join Russia in its conflict with Ukraine.
